He started in center and right field for the Matadors, rebuilding the baseball program in one of the most competitive conferences in the country, the Big West Conference. While attending Northridge, Michael played two summers for Athletes in Action Summer Baseball team in Kansas City. It was there where a few scouts felt like he should try pitching. After taking some pitching lessons at Mac-N-Seitz Baseball Academy, Michael tried out for some Major League teams. The San Diego Padres signed Michael to a minor league contract as a pitcher in the Spring of 2001.

Michael played eight seasons in the minor leagues reaching “Tripe A” for four of those seasons. He played with the San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers and the Newark Bears.
