Liberty Baseball: One Final Look Back

By Chris GeinoskyPOSTED: 10:58 am CDT June 22, 2011

Sophomore shortstop Nathan Winfrey, the only sophomore in Missouri to make the all-state cut, received Liberty’s other first team award. Winfrey hit .432, scored an all-time team record 44 runs, tied for the team lead with 16 extra base hits (nine doubles, five triples and two home runs), and collected 37 RBIs (second on the team) at the plate; provided steady defense in the field; and also led the pitching staff with a 2.59 ERA and five saves.

Derrick Jones called it.

It’s safe to say there are no more nerves. Liberty has piled up 75 runs during a five-game winning streak.

Eight full-time regulars own batting averages above the .300 mark for the Jays — four above .400. Freshman third baseman Nathan Winfrey has been knocking the cover off the ball by hitting a team-best and video game-esque .722 through the first seven games of the season. Jones owns a .480 batting average and .581 on-base mark from the leadoff spot in the lineup.
